WHO IS GABRIELE PIGNOTTA
Director, actor, screenwriter, playwright, and television writer. With a career spanning over twenty years, Gabriele Pignotta is one of the most versatile and recognizable artists on the Italian scene. His plays and films have won over audiences, critics, and broadcasters alike. Every project is a testament to emotional engagement, creative brilliance, and popular success. With a degree in Sociology of Education and a Master’s in Communication, he has successfully channeled his creativity across the stage, the screen, and digital platforms.
Gabriele Pignotta has transformed the art of storytelling into a personal brand. In a career of over twenty years, he has written, directed, and starred in theatrical and cinematic works that masterfully combine intelligent comedy, social insight, and profound empathy. His signature style is unmistakable: a deep, ironic, and contemporary comedy that makes people laugh and reflect, speaking to the audience with genuine authenticity.
MAJOR WORKS
Theatre: 10 plays written, directed, and performed, frequently sold-out in Italy’s most prestigious theatres (Sistina, Manzoni, Alfieri, Brancaccio, Verdi). Cult titles include: Scusa sono in riunione… (Sorry, I’m in a meeting…), Toilet, Ti sposo ma non troppo (I’ll Marry You, But Not Too Much), Mi piaci perché sei così (I Like You Because You’re Like That), and Contrazioni pericolose (Dangerous Contractions).
Cinema: 5 films, including Ti sposo ma non troppo (aired in 3 primetime slots on Rai 1), Ötzi and the Mystery of Time (Giffoni Film Festival award winner), and Toilet (defined by GQ as “one of the best Italian comedies of the last 10 years”).
TV and Web: 10 programs for RAI, Sky, La7, and Italia Uno. Hosting and writing credits for formats such as Al posto tuo, Shake It, The Soup, Navigator, Sabato Italiano, Miss Italia, and I & G.
Social Commitment: Writer and director of the RAI national campaign against violence towards women (3 short films, 9 commercials featuring Gerini, Bova, and Angiolini).
Art in the service of others
Gabriele Pignotta firmly believes that talent should not be an end in itself. For this reason, part of his work is dedicated to causes close to his heart, such as the fight against violence towards women. He has written and directed three television campaigns to raise public awareness on this issue and produced a documentary in South America for the Francesca Rava Foundation. Using his voice to make a difference, however small, is one of the things that brings him the greatest satisfaction.
THE NUMBERS
In the last five live seasons: Over 700,000 spectators per season with average seasonal earnings of 1.5 million and a total overall exceeding 8 million euros.
At the Teatro Sistina, he achieved the highest gross for a specific run, earning €420k in 10 performances and setting the record for prose theater with 1,800 tickets sold in a single day.
On platforms: His latest film Toilet recorded 100,000 AMR on Sky in the first 4 weeks despite having no advertising. On Sky Comedy, this was a surprising result, especially considering it had zero promotion, no lead-in, and no commercials, social media support, interviews, or main channel mentions—factors that typically cause a film on Sky Comedy to go unnoticed. In this scenario, the audience found it organically through word-of-mouth, TV guides, or simple browsing on Sky. This means the title worked on its own, generating a spontaneous “viral” or “curiosity” effect where the audience dedicated continuous viewing time rather than just momentary clicks.
The film Ti sposo ma non troppo had 3 primetime airings on Rai 1, winning its time slot each time with over 2.2 million viewers.
